This week: Why do we feel pain?
You stub your toe and it feels like the world is ending. But a soldier in battle can take a serious injury and not feel it until hours later. Why? Pain is way weirder than you think — and your brain controls all of it.
Here's how it actually works:
🔵 Step 1 — Something hurts your body Nerve endings called nociceptors detect damage — heat, pressure, chemicals from injury — and fire an electrical signal straight up to your brain.
🔵 Step 2 — Your brain decides how much it hurts Pain isn't a fixed signal. Your brain actively adjusts it. Stress, emotion, distraction, and even your expectations can make the exact same injury feel worse or better.
🔵 Step 3 — Your body releases natural painkillers Endorphins — your body's own morphine — flood your system to dampen the signal. That's why extreme stress can temporarily block pain entirely.
The wild part 🤯
Your brain can generate pain even when there is zero physical damage. This is called psychogenic pain — it's completely real, fully felt, and 100% created by your brain. Chronic pain patients aren't "making it up." Their brains are genuinely producing pain signals with no injury present.
Why this matters for medicine
Understanding pain is one of the biggest unsolved challenges in modern medicine. It's why the opioid crisis happened — we treated pain physically without understanding its mental component. The future of pain treatment is in the brain, not just the body.
